BLOG ENTRY … Like The Title Of The Hank Williams Jr. Song  … ‘It’s All Over But The Crying’: 06/30/2017 | 1:00 P.M. (CDT) — 1,700-MILES LATER:  One week ago today, Al rolled into The Big Apple completing an epic journey of support, determination, and love.  Stepping off his bike for the last time on that humid Friday morning, there was Terry at his side.  The first face Al saw in the crowd … Terry.  The first embrace Al received … Terry.   The catalyst of this monumental endeavor … Terry.  Moments after the arrival, tears gave way to cheers as onlookers showed their support for Al and Terry in a massive assembly of all things pink!  Sharing a bond that most can’t fathom, Al and Terry stood silent for a brief moment on the streets of New York City, grateful for the kind words and expression of love from friends and strangers alike.  The accomplishment of traversing 1,700-miles in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) is their unique experience to share with each other, with fellow survivors and with those currently battling breast cancer.  The goal has always been about awareness.  The reality is making a difference, a contribution, and oh what a difference Al and Terry have made.  The 2017 ride may be over, but the work to fund research goes on.  Congratulations Al and Terry.  Thank you for your strength, your fortitude, and your courage.

BLOG ENTRY … You Know What They Say, ‘If It Ain’t Hoboken Don’t Fix It’: 06/22/2017 | 6:45 P.M. (EDT) — AL PUTS THE PINK PEDAL TO THE METAL ON DAY 20. After 19 days in the saddle, Al completed a Herculean effort today riding 94-miles to end day 20 in Jersey City.  Along the way, Terry does her best to keep up, maneuvering the Jeep in heavy metro traffic, spotting Al when she can.  As they approach their final destination for the day, Al and Terry catch a partial glimpse of the New York City and One World Trade Center. Now moving through the city streets in tandem, Al grabs a moment to stop and thank a friend from Bike Hub for helping him navigate much of the New Jersey route.  Just before leaving, Al is stopped by two kind and curious representatives of the New Jersey Department Of Transportation (NJDOT).  After a quick meet-and-greet and a selfie or two, Al is on his way.  Delayed by transportation admirers and flush with his newfound celebrity status, 😉 Terry waits for Al at the Paulus Hook Ferry Terminal in Jersey City.  It’s a bright summer day on the Hudson River.  Squinting ever so slightly due to the flashes of sun reflecting atop the river, Al and Terry collectively gaze upon the full view of the New York City skyline.  It’s at this time that reality sets in for our dynamic duo.  Together they stand on the precipice of completing this amazing journey of awareness, courage, and love.  Tomorrow morning, Al will take the brief ferry ride from Jersey City to Manhattan, courtesy of the New York Waterway.  Once on the island, Al will push off for the last time, covering the final 10-miles of his epic 1,700 mile odyssey.

It’s ever upward and at ’em as Al and Terry began day 20. Al snapped into his Pink Pedals at 7:39 A.M. (EDT), leaving Blairstown New Jersey with a full head of steam. Heavy traffic and mixed emotions await as Al moves ever closer to The Empire State, New York City, and his historic date with destiny.

BLOG ENTRY … Al Put The Summer SOUL In SOULstice: 06/21/2017 | 4:50 P.M. (EDT) — OKAY. SOLSTICE IS NOT SPELLED WITH S-O-U-L, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA. Al began day 19 at 8:00 A.M. (EDT) with one thing on his mind, the Pocono Mountains.  By the end of the day, Al surreptitiously changed the name of the Poco’NO’ Mountains to the Poco’YES’ Mountains!  Trademark and cool merchandise pending of course.  😉  Al believed Wednesday to be his doom but instead, day 19 was a boon.  Starting where he did in Glenburn Pennsylvania, the elevation combined with a more relaxed plateaued mountain range made inclines a bit easier, allowing Al an extremely rare recovery day. Day 19 ended 64-miles ‘down the road’ in Bada Bing … Blairstown New Jersey.  That’s right!  New Jersey, The Garden State.  You gotta problem with that?  😉  Lest we forget, Al is a ‘made man’ … ‘made of steel’ after 19 days on the road.  Can we get an Amen?  Thank you. BLOG ENTRY … Over The Hill, No Way: 06/20/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (EDT) — THIS 58-YEAR-OLD ISN’T OVER THE HILL … YET!  HE STILL HAS THE POCONO MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB ON WEDNESDAY. 😉 Day 18 ended the way it began with hills, hills and more hills.  We don’t want to make a mountain out of a molehill, it’s just … Al’s dupa (butt) feels like it was dragged through a jaggerbush (shrub with thorns) while riding in a buggy (grocery cart) after being dragged through a crick (small stream). Confused?  Don’t be.  That was an example of authentic Pennsylvania vernacular, a tip of the hat so to speak to Al and Terry’s ‘incline-oriented’ host these past few days.  The Quaker State is lovely and at the same time, earnestly elevated!  Al isn’t sure right now if it’s the steep Pennsylvania elevations that are so tough, or the simple fact that he’s been in the saddle for 18 consecutive days.  And speaking of days, this day ended in Glenburn Pennsylvania, 70-miles from Towanda. For those of you scoring at home, the miles tally for day 18 looks like this … 1,532 miles down, 168-miles to New York City (NYC).  The Big Apple is looming large on the horizon with each passing day.  Al continues to race through the miles like a seasoned frequent-flyer.  In fact, the pilot has turned off the fasten your seatbelt sign, you are free to move about the cabin … to MAKE A DONATION.  In the unlikely event of a water landing, Al’s tires can be used as flotation devices.  Our expected arrival in New York City will be Friday, June 23rd.  As we close out day 18, we need to pass on a couple of HUGE SHOUT-OUTS.

BLOG ENTRY … The Upwardly Mobile Reszels: 06/20/2017 | 1:45 P.M. (EDT) — CLIMBING THEIR WAY TO THE TOP, ONE MILE AT A TIME! Day 18 began at 8:40 A.M. (EDT) with a brisk 7-mile climb up yet another Pennsylvania peak!  And if the terrain wasn’t tough enough, Al found himself playing an all too real game of Frogger, dodged and weaved his way through frequent and at times, dangerous truck traffic. Just when the initial 7-mile climb had ended, several additional two-mile climbs reared their upwardly mobile heads, pushing Al back into the saddle once again, straining to keep his legs pumping and those Pink Pedals pushing.  Lunch came early on day 18 as Al needed to break for some much-needed protein to fuel up his body after the brutal multiple climb morning.

BLOG ENTRY … Rain Or Shine, Al Keeps Moving Forward: 06/19/2017 | 6:45 P.M. (EDT) — THE GOOD PEOPLE OF PENNSYLVANIA AND THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS! The weather played a big role on day 17 of the ride.  Throughout much of the day, Al contended with soaking rains, severe weather, fog, and the occasional ray of sunshine.  While Al was drenched to the core as he peddled into Towanda Pennsylvania to end day 17, his spirits were not dampened. Once again, Mother Nature can’t keep this good man down. Even with the atmospheric hurdles, Al traveled another 65-miles for breast cancer research.  Mileage tally for day 17, 1,462-miles down, 238-miles to go.  Check out the map below to see Al’s route for the day.  Day 18 is up next.  Al and Terry could be in The Big Apple by Friday.

SIDE NOTE:  The Kindness Of Strangers … While having dinner tonight at a local restaurant directly across from their hotel, Al and Terry were awestruck once again by the kindness of strangers.  During dinner, unbeknownst to Al and Terry, word of their journey was filtering throughout the dining room, courtesy of Al and Terry’s  waitress.  All of a sudden, there they were.  A lovely couple known simply as, the Gallaghers, standing beside Al and Terry’s table.  They took just a moment to introduce themselves, showing their appreciation with a smile, a kind word and a donation placed on the edge of the table.  At the end of the meal, Al asked for the check only to find out that the Gallaghers had picked up the tab for their dinner.  Another expression of gratitude and gesture of kindness.  There are so many wonderful people across this country.  Al and Terry are blessed to have met two of those wonderful people tonight in the town of Towanda, population 2,841.

BLOG ENTRY … The First Weather Delay: 06/19/2017 | 8:50 A.M. (EDT) — RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS ALWAYS GETS ME DOWN … DOWNHILL AND DOWN THE ROAD WE HOPE! Day 17 began with light rain which turned into heavy rain and then severe storms. Al rode in the rain for two hours before he had to come off the bike due to the trecherous wet road conditions and severe weather warnings in the region. Amazing that this is only the first weather delay in 17 days.  Before the rain became too heavy, Al was able to make a couple of pit stops during the morning ride.  See the photos and captions from Terry below.  For now, Al and Terry are waiting out the rain and storms, taking shelter in their car.  More to come tonight.

BLOG ENTRY … The Wonderful People You Meet Along The Way: 06/18/2017 | 5:54 P.M. (EDT) — MOTHER NATURE AND HILLARY MOUNTAIN ARE BACK, AND THEY BROUGHT A FRIEND! During the afternoon of day 16, Al welcomed a couple of old friends back to the ride; swirling winds and hilly roads. Just as Al was getting reacquainted with his old pals, a new friend knocked on the door. His name … Denton … Denton Hill Summit of the Allegheny Mountain Family, elevation 2,424 feet. Well, as you can imagine, Al was not exactly prepared for company this afternoon but you know what they say, two’s company, three’s a real 2.5-mile morale killer. ;-} Even with the 2017 pre-ride map/route prep, Denton came out of nowhere.  Still, Al pressed on through Sweden Valley, welcoming Denton with open arms, successfully putting his new buddy ‘at the top‘ of Al’s BFFs for life list.  Day 16 ended just outside of Wellsboro Pennsylvania with an impressive 76-miles in all.  As we wrap things up for the night, Al and Terry wanted to extend a Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there.  Also.  They would be remiss if they didn’t thank Chuck Tameris of Baxters Bakery in Gaines Pennsylvania.  A man after their own hearts, Chuck is an avid fundraiser for breast cancer and passionate advocate for the cause.  Chuck graciously provided Al and Terry with great insight, pink ‘merch’ and a very generous donation to the Pink Pedals 4 A Cure BCRF fundraising website.  Thank you, Chuck! BLOG ENTRY … The Father’s Day Push Ever Further Into Pennsylvania: 06/18/2017 | 8:00 A.M. (EDT) — GETTING IT DONE! On this Father’s Day Sunday, Al awoke early, studying his maps, prepping for day 16.  While the maps fill his head with the business at hand, Al’s thoughts quickly shift to the significance of the day, it’s meaning, and his two boys, Ron and Randy.  While they can’t be together today, Al takes comfort knowing that soon, they will be reunited.  Leaving Smethport Pennslyvania at 8:00 A.M. (EDT), Al embraces day 16 with new energy, determination, and confidence.

BLOG ENTRY … The Bear Went Over The Mountain To See What He Could See: 06/17/2017 | 3:15 P.M. (EDT) — THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN WAS ALL THAT HE COULD SEE! Was there really any doubt people?  Mountain man and now Iron Man Al conquered the climb to Smethport Pennsylvania, elevation 2,495.  Al’s winter training really paid off on day 15, traversing 79-miles up, up, up to his final destination in McKean County. But was it Al’s training or divine intervention?  Unable to find a suitable picnic spot, Al and Terry were forced to hunker down and eat their lunch at a local church in Mount Jewett.  A little protein and a little prayer can’t hurt, right?  Either way, our collective prayers have been answered!  Al took on the steep incline of day 15 and triumphed.  After the heroic push, Al and Terry grabbed a moment to take in the beauty of Kinzua State Park, gas up the Jeep (awesome full-service stations in Smethport) and enjoy a well deserved ice-cream treat. Along the route today, Terry snapped a few photos of the lovely Pennsylvania countryside.  You can check out her equally lovely photos below.  ‘ThrICE’ therapy awaits, but before day 15 ends, Al and Terry wanted to pass along a couple of HUGE SHOUT-OUTS to local business owners in the region.

SHOUT-OUT number one goes to Craig and Antonio Scalise of the Horton House Bed & Breakfast Inn for the complimentary overnight accommodations.  The Inn offers guests five elegantly appointed bedrooms with private baths, wood burning fireplaces, a game room, lounge, music room, ballroom, library, living room, sundeck and year-round hot tub.  A wonderful place for Al and Terry to relax and lay their weary heads after a day like today.

SHOUT-OUT number two goes out to Andy at Warren Cycle Shop. Al had a little gear trouble during his intense climb and Andy stayed past store hours to fix the gear issue, FREE of charge.

BLOG ENTRY … The Ascent To Smethport Pennsylvania: 06/17/2017 | 8:55 A.M. (EDT) — IT’S ALL UPHILL FROM HERE! With his leg muscles still screaming, Al doubles down on day 15 knowing full well that today’s ride will test him like no other. From the start in Youngsville to the projected finish in Smethport, Al will need to draw upon every bit of his strength to conquer this huge day 15 riding challenge. What keeps Al going? What helps Al push through the pain? One simple answer … Terry. Al musters the raw courage and tenacity to accomplish days like today by reflecting on Terry’s battle with breast cancer only a few years ago. Terry is a warrior, all too familiar with CLIMBING MOUNTAINS, SURVIVING a treacherous path, and finding a way to come out on top.  During that difficult and dark time, Al was there to support Terry every step of the way. Years later, on day 15 and every day, Terry is there for her own warrior … Al.

BLOG ENTRY … The Bigfoot Or The Big Pedal: 06/16/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (EDT) — ROUTE 6 WAS A COMPLETE ‘TERRAIN’ WRECK! According to Al, day 14 was by far the toughest day of the ride. Route 6 did a little butt kicking but so did Al who completed an amazing 82-miles, even with the difficult inclines. I guess you could say that Al has been ‘terraining’ for this all year long. 😉 Promise, that was the last ‘terrain’ pun in the blog tonight!  Day 14 ended in Youngsville Pennsylvania, a borough in Warren County. Like always, after today’s ride, Terry picked up her Pink Pedal Partner and they headed to their overnight accommodations.  Shout-out to the Home2 Suites By Hilton in Erie Pennslyvania for the discounted room rate.  Much appreciated. Dinner this evening took on a different feel for two very special reasons.  The first reason and probably the most important of the two, Al had a freak, unexpected Sasquatch (Bigfoot) sighting, which he survived and lived the tell the tale.  The second and again, not in any way as important as the first reason involving the awesome Bigfoot sighting … Al and Terry celebrated some kind of anniversary tonight.  Oh yea, their 39th wedding anniversary.  No big deal, moving on.  All kidding aside.  How wonderful it is for Al and Terry to celebrate 39-years of marriage, working side-by-side for such an awesome cause.  Here’s to the happy couple!  Check out the map below to see Al’s route for the day.

BLOG ENTRY … The Climb Begins: 06/16/2017 | 1:30 P.M. (EDT) — DANGEROUS ROADS AHEAD! Al began day 14 at 7:57 A.M. on the Pennsylvania state line, fully anticipating a leg-numbing push into Albion and beyond. Little did Al know that this first stretch of Route 6 is also a truck route, creating dangerous conditions with high-speed vehicles sailing past Al and his bike. Speeding vehicles aside, the first leg of the Pennsylvania Route 6 roadway is made up of curves a plenty and hills as far as the eye can see. Lots more of that on tap for the next several days. Al and Terry made a brief stop after entering the state of Pennsylvania for a press interview.  Look for more information on that soon. Post interview with the newspaper and adoring paparazzi ;-), Al and Terry halted their forward momentum, enjoying lunch in Union City Pennsylvania. Based on the takeout containers visible in the photo below, appears the lunch menu consisted of yummy dinner leftovers from their meal last night at Joey’s Italian Village. Small world-ism … Al and Terry’s food-server Megan has an aunt in Monticello Minnesota.  Said aunt owns a lovely little flower shop in … Monticello.

BLOG ENTRY … The Virtue, Liberty, and Independence Of Pennsylvania Welcomes Al and Terry On Day 13: 06/15/2017 | 4:21 P.M. (EDT) — SIX STATES DOWN, THREE TO GO! Staying ahead of the rain most of the day, Al stormed across the Pennsylvania state line at 2:30 P.M. (EDT). That’s six states down with three to go.  Day 13 was a 79-mile Ohio farewell tour of sorts as Al and Terry breezed through towns like Geneva On The Lake, Ashtabula, and Conneaut.  On the way to their overnight accommodations at the Lost Pearl Bed & Breakfast in Madison Ohio, Al and Terry found an awesome place to stop and enjoy an ice cold root beer and a frosty malt. Al pushed off from Euclid Ohio at 7:55 A.M. on what will likely be the last leg of his Ohio push.  With the Cleveland skyline fading in the distance, Al heads east toward the Pennsylvania state line and what will most assuredly be his toughest challenge yet, the expansive, mountainous terrain of The Keystone State.  Special shout-out to the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Avon Ohio for the Wednesday night complimentary overnight accommodations.

BLOG ENTRY … The Push Into Cleveland: 06/14/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (EDT) — CLEVELAND MAY ROCK, BUT SO DOES AL! Rocking out another 80-miles on day 12, Al continued his assault on the highways and byways of Ohio.  Hello, Cleveland!  With greatly reduced heat and humidity thanks to Lake Erie, Al experienced a more comfortable day in the saddle.  Day 12 ended in Euclid Ohio but not before a couple of photo ops at the famous Cleveland sign and FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.  Immediately after the ride ended, Terry made a beeline to the Lake Erie Harley Davidson shop.  There, Terry promptly purchased the perfect pink bandana to help rectify Al’s current head striping issue.  Nicely done Terry.  You earn that CEO title each and every day.  Hail to Terry, Chief Everything Officer!  Other post ride activities included the usual ‘Thrice With Ice’ therapy, dinner and a special visit to Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Indians.  The Cleveland Indians?  Why would two Die-Hard Cub fans have any interest in visiting Progressive Field? BLOG ENTRY … The Miles Keep Keep Falling Away, 1,001 Down, 699 To Go: 06/14/2017 | 1:00 P.M. (EDT) — ON TODAY’S LUNCH MENU; GATORADE, A SANDWICH, THREE IBU WITH A SIDE OF PAIN RELIEVING CREAM. As Al begins day 12, he does so with a staggering amount of miles under his belt, 1,001 down with 699 to go. Departing Avery Ohio at 7:15 A.M., Al and Terry set their sights on Cleveland.  First stop, the town of Huron and a chance to take in the beauty that is, Lake Erie. Before leaving the beautiful lakeshore, Terry had time to create a quick video, chat with the locals about the visiting Mayflies (what they call Canadian soldiers), and with the help of a little bunny friend, pose for a quick pic with a VERY LARGE Easter basket.  Why not right?  When in Huron, do as the Huronians. 😉 Also.  When is she ever going to see another Easter basket this BIG!  As Al departed Huron, he happened upon a fellow solo bicyclist headed for Wyoming after leaving Albany New York several days ago.

A few hours later, Al and Terry re-connected for lunch at a lovely park in Lakewood Ohio, just outside of Cleveland.  Al powers down his Gatorade, roast beef and swiss cheese sandwich, three ibuprofen and applies a heaping healthy side of pain relieving cream for good measure.  Yummy!  The new normal for Al’s roadside lunch break.  Thankfully, the heat has abated, for now.  Al continues to power through the strong northeast winds, closing in on the city known to ROCK, Cleveland.

BLOG ENTRY … The Evening Routine Of Putting Al, On Ice: 06/13/2017 | 7:30 P.M. (EDT) — DEALING WITH THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG WHEN IT COMES TO THE DAILY POST-RIDE PREP. As we close out day 11, we wanted to give you a glimpse of an important evening routine for Al and Terry. It’s called, ‘Thrice With Ice, Very Nice’.  😉

Step 1. Crank the Jeep AC setting to POLAR NORTH, moments before Al ends his daily ride.

Step 2. Prepare an ice bath dubbed Al’s POPSICLE POOL.

Step 3. Get a LEG UP on the next day by icing down Al’s leg to reduce the inflammation and swelling of his strained right calf muscle.

BLOG ENTRY … The Battle With Mother Nature Rages On As She Turns Up The Heat, Again: 06/13/2017 | 3:29 P.M. (EDT) — LAKE ERIE WILL NEED TO WAIT ONE MORE DAY. It’s pretty obvious by now that Mother Nature has it in for Al as he travels the narrow roadways of The Buckeye State.  Yep.  We’re harping on the heat again. Tough not to when air temps soared well into the 90s and heat indexes approached 100 degrees.  The heat even shortened Al’s lunch break just outside of Clyde Ohio.  Al opted to eat his lunch roadside to expedite the break due to escalating temps.  By 1:35 P.M., six hours after he started day 11, Al was forced off the bike due to the excessive heat.  Day 11 ended in Avery Ohio, just 6-miles from Lake Erie.  Amazingly, Al was able to log 97-miles during this super-heated day.  Rest, relaxation and an ice-bath await Al as Terry logs her own miles, driving to the overnight hotel in Fremont Ohio.  And speaking of accommodations, Al and Terry would like to extend a special shout-out to the staff at the Choice Hotels Quality Inn & Conference Center in Fremont Ohio for the complimentary room.  While today was filled with heat and humidity, Terry was able to find a couple of very COOL ‘Pics-2-Click’ for your viewing pleasure. BLOG ENTRY … The Case Of The Missing Apple iPhone: 06/13/2017 | 7:25 A.M. (EDT) — WHILE THERE’S NO APP FOR THAT, I GUESS AL AND TERRY CAN ‘RACK’ 😉 IT UP TO GOOD LUCK, THE GOOD LORD, AND GOOD LIVING. Al was on the road early this morning, leaving Napoleon Ohio at 7:25 A.M., trying to stay ahead of thunderstorms predicted for later in the day. When Al said goodbye to Terry, both agreed to regroup in a couple of hours, giving Terry time to head to town to stock up on supplies. As Terry was entered the first store, her iPhone began to ring.  The call was from an unknown Bowling Green Ohio phone number. Terry answered, surprised to hear Al’s voice, wondering why he wasn’t calling from his own iPhone. Al proceeds to tell Terry that he accidentally left his iPhone on the bike rack on the back of the car.  Rapidly, Terry rushed to the back of the car, never expecting to find Al’s iPhone.  After driving 5-miles to town, miracle-of-miracles, there it was, nestled in the bike rack wheel housing right where Al left it. Truly unbelievable.  Communication between Al and Terry is critical.  The loss of a phone puts Al’s safety and the continuation of the ride in jeopardy.  Thankfully, Terry was able to quickly return Al’s iPhone and the drama to start day 11 was at an end.

BLOG ENTRY … The Ohio Push Begins: 06/12/2017 | 5:15 P.M. (EDT) — OHIO … OH, THE HEAT, HUMIDITY AND HOME COOKING?  Today Al and Terry said another fond farewell to state number four of nine.  Thanks for the memories Indiana.  Hello, Ohio.  Special shout-out to Kenny at Schlemmer Farms for stopping to snap a photo of Al and Terry roadside, as they crossed the Ohio border.  The ‘official’ Ohio weather forecast, as shown here, about sums it up people!  Hot and humid with a 100% chance of home cooking?  Al and Terry stopped in Paulding Ohio for a HOT lunch.  Was the food prepared over a stove or grill?  No!  It was a HOT meal because … it was HOT!  Air temperature that is. And another thing!  It’s like, Al eats lunch everyday?  What’s up with that?  😉  Shouldn’t he be on a bike riding somewhere?  Kidding of course.  Al needs his mid-day lunch or the miles would be fewer and far between. Wonderful to see the generosity of the people Al and Terry have met along the way.  Also wonderful to see the tremedous amount of American pride, exhibited in the flying of Old Glory.  Both Al and Terry are amazed at all of the American flags lining the ride route to date.  Quick donation update.  The Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride BCRF fundraising page surpassed the $3,000 mark today.  That’s roughly 64-hours of breast cancer research.  Keep those donations coming America.

Al and Terry ended day 10 in Napoleon Ohio with a wonderful home cooked meal at Hill’s Family Restaurant. BLOG ENTRY … The Halfway Point MILEstone: 06/12/2017 | 8:50 A.M./9:25 A.M. (EDT) — 10 FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER ON DAY 10. At 8:50 A.M. (EDT), Al began day 10 of the ride departing Yoder Indiana, rested and ready to roll. However, by 9:25 A.M., less than an hour after his start in Yoder, Al reached Hoagland Indiana, the official halfway point of the 2017 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure ride! That’s 850-miles of Pink Pedal Pushing! A wonderful MILEstone for Al and Terry.

On this the 10th day of the ride, Al and Terry wanted to share 10 Facts About Breast Cancer, additional reasons for taking on this ride and why it’s so very important to support organizations like The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

1. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men worldwide.

2. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in 140 of 184 countries worldwide.

3. Globally, breast cancer now represents one in four of all cancers in women.

4. Since 2008, worldwide breast cancer incidence has increased by more than 20 percent. Mortality has increased by 14 percent.

5.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women after skin cancer.

6.  The five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with localized breast cancer (cancer that hasn’t spread to lymph nodes or outside the breast) is 98.5 percent.

7.  The five-year relative survival rate for female invasive breast cancer patients has improved from 75 percent in the mid-1970s to 90 percent today.

8.  440 men will die from breast cancer.  2,350 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men.

9.  40,290 women will die from breast cancer.

10.  231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2015.

BLOG ENTRY … The Heat, The Fans, and A Little Heavenly Intervention: 06/11/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (EDT) — IN GOD WE TRUST. Day nine consisted of heat, wind, and more heat. As predicted, temps hovered near or at 90 degrees for most of the day, with hot southwest winds helping and hindering Al’s progress as he pushed through the heart of Indiana. Short of a slightly tweaked calf muscle chased with a little Advil on the side, the ride on day nine went off without a hitch.  Highlights on the road included taking the time to snap a photo of Al on ‘Paw Paw’ (what the grandkids call Al) Pike road and the opportunity for Al to ride the ‘In God We Trust’ bike trail, his first time.  In an attempt to beat the heat, Al and Terry headed for some shade to enjoy their lunch, happening upon the Salamonie State Park in Lagro Indiana.  By 3:00 P.M. (EDT) the ride for day nine had come to a close with another 78-miles on the odometer.  After the grueling day of chasing miles on the super-heated pavement, Al and Terry stopped at an Applebee’s in Fort Wayne for dinner and some air-conditioned comfort. After a brief but pleasant conversation with their extraordinary server, the joint was suddenly buzzing with Pink Pedals 4 A Ride at the epicenter of all the action.  Applebee’s employees and patrons alike wanted to know more about the 1,700 ride, the goal, and cause.  Huge shout-out to the awesome Applebee’s team (pictured below; Kitchen Manager Brian, Service Manager Kayleigh, and Server Mandy) for the great food, the tremendous show of support and the complimentary meal. Al was hoping for a more westerly wind, something at his back to start the day. The morning ride routine has become commonplace now. BLOG ENTRY … The Support Of Friends and Family: 06/10/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (CDT) — A MOMENT TO REFLECT, THEN THE BIG PUSH INTO INDIANA. Last night, Al and Terry had a moment to stop and share their collective experiences with close friends and family. A rare moment to relax, enjoy a few home-cooked favorites, share stories from the road and thank those around them for their unwavering support.

Al and Terry closed out day eight in Fletcher Indiana. In all, Al logged 88-miles today, fighting the hot and humid conditions. Almost half-way across the state, and in just one day. No time to stop for lunch on day eight. Instead, Al and Terry dined à la carte, on the road, pushing to complete the day’s ride before the heat became unbearable. Tonight Al and Terry will sleep in comfort with the AC cranked, courtesy of the Super 8 Motel in Rochester Indiana. Very accommodating crew, allowing Al and Terry to move their second-floor to the first-floor, saving Al the trouble of carrying his bike up a flight of stairs. Retiring early tonight. More heat and humidity predicted for tomorrow.  See you tomorrow.

BLOG ENTRY … The Jackson 5, The Crossroads Of America State and The Record Setting Pace: 06/09/2017 | 5:21 P.M. (CDT) — GOIN’ BACK TO INDIANA. During their ‘formative’ years growing up in Illinois, Al and Terry frequented the state of Indiana time and time again. Since Al ended day seven at the Indiana state line, it feels only appropriate that we flash back to 1971, revisiting the Jackson 5 and their chart-climbing smash hit, Goin’ Back To Indiana.  While you’re getting your 1970’s groove on, courtesy of the Jackson 5, cozy up in the basement bean bag, pop on your favorite pair of funky bell-bottoms, fire up the lava lamp and check out this outta sight update for the second half of day seven.  The strong winds continued, helping Al set a record pace.  By the end of the day, Al had chalked up an amazing 105-miles.  While the pace was great, temperatures hovering around 93 degrees made the final few hours of the ride difficult.  With day seven at an end, Al and Terry are off to stay the night with Terry’s mom.  Home cooking, family and soft beds await.

BLOG ENTRY … The Wind At His Back: 06/09/2017 | 2:28 P.M. (CDT) — FAVORABLE WINDS HAVE AL SAYING – I HAVE THE NEED. THE NEED FOR SPEED! Finally, after days of fighting the wind, Mother Nature opted to breathe new life into day seven with the delivery of a welcome care package, compliments of Mom herself and close cousin, Gus T. Winds. 😉 With the wind at his back, Al and Terry decided on a quick lunch in Kempton Illinois before hustling back on the bike to take advantage of the favorable conditions. Before leaving Kempton, Terry captured a photo of a ‘country quaint’ Standard Oil gas station, stopping for a brief moment to give the Jeep a little get-up-and-go juice.  Not many gas stations out here in rural Illinois.  Terry takes advantage of the fortuitous fuel stop, allowing Rolling Tide 4 A Cure 2 to guzzle a little fuel before setting off on the afternoon push.  Along the way, Terry had a moment to do a little ‘windshield shopping’, spotting a very cool tractor mailbox that she hopes is available soon on Amazon.  😉

BLOG ENTRY … The Heat Is On: 06/09/2017 | 8:20 A.M. (CDT) — ILLINOIS TURNS UP THE HEAT. As Al leaves Wenona Illinois, he does so with temperatures approaching 75 degrees. This kind of early morning heat can only mean one thing, afternoon heat indexes in the upper eighties. Important that Al stays hydrated throughout the day and finds shelter with cover as often as he can. The weekend forecast looks bleak as more warm and humid conditions persist in the region.

Our tired two-some will be sleeping under the stars tonight, camping at Condit’s Ranch in Putnam Illinois. BLOG ENTRY … The Song, The Heat and A ‘Centrally’ Located Park: 06/08/2017 | 2:29 P.M. (CDT) — WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN.  The first half of day six has been a gift when compared to the semi-mountainous state of Iowa.  A handful of rolling hills mixed with slightly higher temperatures and a fair share of terrain challenged pavement (flats) 😉 welcomed Al on his first leg of the Illinois push.  While Al continues to put lots of miles on the odometer, Terry has a moment to wax philosophic about the ride, her battle, their strong relationship and unmatched love for one another.  What brought all this on? A song on radio of course.  As Terry checked Henry Illinois in the rearview mirror, the same place the couple shared lunch only a few moments ago, there it was playing on the radio for all of Henry to hear, We’ve Only Just Begun by the Carpenters.

SIDE NOTE:  For you Carpenters fans, click the song title above and enjoy an appropriate, Throwback Thursday, Magically Marvelous Musical Interlude.

SIDE NOTE:  ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ was the song friends and family heard during  Al and Terry first dance at their wedding reception 39 wonderful years ago.  Today, the song is an iconic symbol of the ride on day six, the strength of their marriage and the incredible love Al and Terry have for one another.  Okay, okay!  Gear shift out of the mushy stuff for now. Back to the day six ride update … already in progress.

While in Henry Illinois, Al and Terry got a little preview of the end game.  Nestled between Casey’s General Store and the Italian Villa Restaurant, there lies a park with a very familiar name, Central Park.  Six days to Central Park?  Well, if you’re referring to Central Park in Henry Illinois, sure.  Lots more miles to go before the Pink Pedals team gazes upon Central Park, New York City proper.  😉

Al left Cambridge Illinois just before 9:00 A.M., passing the beautiful Henry County courthouse, landscapes and a Cambridge Village Sign ‘O’ The Times (thank you Prince) with a message we can all embrace. 😉

(CDT) — WEATHER CONTINUES TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE DURING DAY FIVE.  It was a tough day in the saddle as intense winds continue to plague Al’s ride.  After leaving Bennett earlier in the morning, the winds picked up, the humidity increased and so did the rolling terrain.  After a ‘wild’ ride in the morning, Al and Terry settled in for a mid-day bite in Orion Illinois.  During lunch, Al and Terry remarked about the wonderful people and places visited in the first five days.  Both agreed that Midwesterners love their country and their Cubbies! Al was back on the bike promptly after lunch, trying to put as many miles behind him in spite of the wind.  Al was just a few miles from Orion when he spied an oasis of tempting icy Wild Cherry delights.  Yep.  Al had spied with his little eye, a 7-Eleven.  Needless to say, Al made a quick call to Terry and just like that, Slurpees were in-route.  Truckers in the area picked up Al’s call to Terry over the airwaves.  The call transcript was obtained for your reading pleasure … ‘Breaker, breaker this is Rolling Tide 4 A Cure 1.  You got your ears on Rolling Tide 4 A Cure 2?  I was just about to put the hammer down when I spotted a 7-Eleven.  Need you to do a flip-flop, pass the gear jammer and head to the 7-Eleven for a little Wild Cherry Slurpee go-go juice.  You copy?  Give me a holler and be sure to keep an eye out for the Kojaks with the Kodaks.’ Well, once Al and Terry completed their Slurpee convoy, it was back to business.  The winds made the last four hours of the ride brutal with Al averaging only 11-to-12 miles per hour.  The strong east-northeast winds were daunting, constantly in Al’s face, pushing him to finish strong.  When it was all said and done, Al racked up 78-miles by the end of day five, stopping in Cambridge IL.

BLOG ENTRY … The Land Of Lincoln Homecoming: 06/07/2017 | 6:06 A.M. (CDT) — GOODBYE IOWA. HELLO ILLINOIS. Al pushed off south of Bennett IA very early this morning, hoping to get ahead of windy conditions forecast for later in the day.  In less than two hours, just after 8:00 A.M. on this day five of the ride, Al entered the state of Illinois. Former ‘home again home again, jiggety jig’ … sort of. 😉 For those of you that didn’t know, Al and Terry lived and worked in The Land Of Lincoln for several years. Al is from Midlothian. Terry lived in Markham. They met, married and began their life together in Illinois. Now on their home turf, here’s hoping that the Illinois roads are flat, the winds are calm and the crossing, a safe one.

BLOG ENTRY … The Iowa Push (Part 6.): 06/06/2017 | 5:18 P.M. (CDT) — S’MORE AND S’MORE MILES. Day four is in the books. Al and Terry wrapped up another hilly day on the road in Bennett Iowa. The couple traveled to Eldridge Iowa to relax and camp for the night. No time s’mores or ghost stories by the fire, just some carb-loading grub, a little relaxation and maybe a movie. Then it’s off to the sleeping bags for some quality sack time. The Wednesday weather forecast isn’t looking good with very windy conditions predicted. Iowa weather, bluffs and hills haven’t been kind to Al, but relief MAY be in the mix. Illinois is within reach so rejoice Al and Terry, former Illinois flatlanders! BLOG ENTRY … The Iowa Push (Part 3.): 06/05/2017 | 6:00 P.M. (CDT) — IF YOU RIDE IT. THEY WILL DONATE. Al and Terry fulfilled a bucket list dream this evening by ending the ride in Dyersville Iowa.  Dyersville Iowa?  Bucket list?  Yep!  For those that don’t know, Dyersville Iowa is a mecca for Midwest Baseball Fanatics.  Why?  Here, hidden within the dense Iowan cornfields, you will find the baseball field used in the movie Field Of Dreams (FOD). Tonight, seated on the makeshift bleachers of this midwestern sports movie memorabilia gem, we find Al and Terry.  Pretty obvious from the photo below that Al and Terry are as happy as an Iowa corn stalk that finds itself knee high to elephant’s eye by the fourth of July.  That’s authentic Iowan jargon, my friends.  Okay.  Enough with the sightseeing, here’s the scoop on the second half of the day.  The initial push into Iowa was hilly.  It was windy.  It was … bluffy.  😉  No matter.  Al is reaping the benefits of what he sowed knocking out 98-miles today.  Ten months of intensive training is really paying off.  After three days, Al is now 66-miles ahead of schedule.  Even Shoeless Joe Jackson would be impressed.  And on a related note, kind of, Al and Terry saw a fire truck in the middle of a farm.  Go figure.  If you haven’t already done so, please MAKE A DONATION TODAY. BLOG ENTRY … The Iowa Push (Part 2.): 06/05/2017 | 2:45 P.M. (CDT) — MOTHER NATURE AND BLUFFS MAKE FOR A TOUGH GO ON DAY THREE. The winds on day three have been a blessing and curse.  At the start of the day, the winds favored Al’s push, helping to increase his progress over the first few days of the ride.  As the morning continued, the winds changed suddenly, working against Al, making for a difficult ride leading up to his mid-day break with Terry.  With the morning ride at an end, Al and Terry regrouped in historic Elkader Iowa for lunch and a quick review of the afternoon weather.  Elkander is the same town they stopped in last year.  The familiarity of stops along the way allows Al and Terry to recall fond memories from the inaugural ride of 2016.  Battling the fierce winds wasn’t the only obstacle of the first part of the day.  The bluffs have sapped some of Al’s strength and at the same time, Terry’s cell signal.  Constantly scanning the horizon and her iPhone for weather updates, the bluffs of Iowa have at times denied Terry updated weather info and relief for Al.  Even with the tough conditions, both Al and Terry push on deeper into Iowa. Al left Lansing Iowa this morning, heading into the rolling plains and cornfields of the Hawkeye State. Overnight, the high temperatures dropped by nearly 20 degrees. BLOG ENTRY … The Ice Down and The Ice Cream: 06/04/2017 | 8:19 P.M. (CDT) — I SCREAM,  YOU SCREAM,  WE ALL SCREAM FOR … ‘SKINNY DIP’ ICE CREAM. Al and Terry ended day two of the Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride in Lansing Iowa.  After only two days, Al is 41-miles ahead of schedule.  The extra miles will give Al and Terry a much-needed buffer in case Mother Nature and/or any of the remaining states’ Departments of Transportation (DOT), decide to throw the dynamic duo a curve or two along the way.  While day two is done ‘all but the shouting’ or in this case, screaming ;-), the ONLY screaming heard tonight is coming from a local Lansing frosty hot spot.  Al and Terry found the ‘Skinny Dip Ice Cream Shop’ on the 2016 ride.  The ice cream was so good, they had to stop again for a cool frosty treat before heading to the hotel.  Looks like Al is enjoying a little Mint Chocolate Chip in a waffle cone.  Pretty sure he deserves it and, is probably in a calorie deficit after 88-miles today.  Al and Terry will be staying in La Crosse Wisconsin tonight.  Kudos and thanks to the staff at Home2 Suites By Hilton in La Crosse Wisconsin for the free overnight accommodations.  While they can’t see that New York City skyline just yet, tonight, Al and Terry are definitely in a … New York State Of Mind, thanks to Billy Joel and Tony Bennett for the assist.  See you tomorrow morning in Lansing Iowa.  If you haven’t already done so, please MAKE A DONATION TODAY. BLOG ENTRY … The Hawkeye State: 06/04/2017 | 2:04 P.M. (CDT) — GOODBYE MINNESOTA. HELLO IOWA. Al and Terry are now on Iowa soil.  Check out the video of Al crossing the Iowa state line.  Hours before, Al and Terry continued their journey through classic, lovely Minnesota.  Towns like Sugar Loaf Bluff south of Winona, Pickwick and Brownsville appeared before them, exhibiting the splendor of their beautiful bluffs, wetlands and lush landscapes.  Around 11:26 A.M., Al and Terry grabbed a table just inside the city limits of Brownsville for lunch.  The hills are making for some tough going at times, but Al and Terry continue to press on.  After lunch, Al is back on the bike, setting off from New Albin Iowa.  If you haven’t already done so, please MAKE A DONATION TODAY. A beautiful sunrise and gorgeous blue sky greeted Al and Terry as they awoke for the start of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride day two.  Al set off from Weaver Minnesota just before 8:00 A.M.  Today’s route will take Al and Terry through the remainder of the great state of Minnesota, heading into the Hawkeye State … Iowa. BLOG ENTRY … The End Of Day One:  06/03/2017 | 5:47 P.M. (CDT) — BIG BLOW MEANS ALL GO FOR TEAM PP4AC.  Weeks before the start of the ride, heavy winds were predicted for day one.  Back then, Al planned on 85-miles based on the weather forecast.  Well … the winds came on day one but Al was not deterred.  By the end, Al had traversed a whopping 104 miles, ending his ride in Weaver Minnesota. Pleased with their Pink Pedal Power Progress, 😉 Al and Terry celebrated their triumph over the wind by BLOWING into Slippery’s Tavern & Ristorante to relax and have dinner.  Some of you may remember that Slippery’s was featured in the movie ‘Grumpy Old Men’ starring Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret.  And speaking of ‘Grumpy Old Men’, Al and Terry would like to pass on a huge shout-out to the Coffee Mill Inn & Suites, who graciously provided complimentary overnight accommodations … in the Grumpy Old Men’s Suite no less!  Time to wrap up the day, do a little bike prep for day two and then off to sleep.  Another big day tomorrow.  Pacing is key, as this is only day one.  If you haven’t already done so, please MAKE A DONATION TODAY.
