In 2016, Al completed a 517-mile solo bicycle ride from St. Paul, MN to Chicago, IL.
In 2017, Al completed a 1,700-mile solo bicycle ride from St. Paul, MN to the global headquarters of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in New York City.
AND IN 2018 … Al hopes to complete the ride of a lifetime … an epic CROSS-COUNTRY 3,500-mile ride from Santa Monica, California to the corporate headquarters of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in New York City.

Al and Terry Reszel hope to raise a minimum of $15,000 in donations for the BCRF during the 2018 fundraising period. ‘A Four Letter Word … HOPE.’

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Let the photos that follow fill your hearts and minds with 10,000+ words and more. No additional words are required. Except for this. Late last year, when many of us were busy with holiday gatherings and celebrations, Al and Terry were committing themselves to a herculean undertaking. A commitment to give their all. To cross our country with a singular purpose. To put their lives on hold for forty-one days so that others could find hope. Today, Al and Terry made good on that commitment. Let their devotion and sacrifice be a shining example for us all. Today, Al and Terry get the last word and that word is action. Let us all go forward with a renewed sense of compassion and commitment because, in the end, the catalyst for a cure is you.

Like the headwaters of a robust and redoubtable river, Al and Terry’s family surged east, arriving on the banks of the Hudson River to welcome, uplift, and encourage their heroes, on the eve of an exceptional achievement. A prelude of things to come. New York is beckoning. Al patiently awaits his moment to complete a mission of love, sacrifice, and hope. Al’s ride will end tomorrow, but the battle to find a cure rages on.

‘Lead Down The Garden Path.’

Wednesday was your garden variety kind of day. Al felt good knocking out another 78-miles. The peaks of the Poconos were peeking at Al’s backside bidding him a fond farewell. The hustle and bustle of traffic nearing the state line picked up a bit and temps were in the mid-to-low 80s for most of the day. Al started the morning in Pennsylvania but by mid-day, The Keystone State was just a fond memory as Al and Terry brushed off their best Jersey vernacular, saying loudly and with attitude … How You Doin’ Succasunna? Al will spend all day Thursday in The Garden State, pedaling ever closer to the island of Manhatten and the end of his 3,500-mile cross-country journey.

‘Making The Grade.’

Today was all about making the grade, a 14% grade that is. Mountains, mountains, and more mountains, that was the mercifully magnificent mantra for day thirty-eight of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. During his 75-mile ride to Jonas, Pennsylvania, Al was forced to endure a 21-mile climb. When he got to the top of that multidimensional marvelously manicured mountain, Al faced a 14% grade straight downhill. Needless to say, Al’s brake pads were significantly thinner once he arrived at the bottom of that steep descent. With more Wednesday ascents on the horizon, Al is hoping he can make a few molehills out of mountains in the heavily forested region known as the Poconos.

‘Fueled By Family, Friends, And Faith.’

Al departed Bellefonte, Pennsylvania at 7:45 a.m. (ET) today with a plan to push deep into the Pennsylvania Amish countryside. His goal was to end the day less than 250-miles from The Big Apple. Al accomplished that and so much more arriving in Catawissa, Pennsylvania to the cheers of family. The charm and beauty of the region transported Al and Terry back in time, allowing them to once again enjoy the love of family, the simplicity of a hug and, the kindness of those dear to them.

Days before they write the final chapter of this epic story of devotion and dedication, Al and Terry’s family came to their aid. Traveling hours by car and staging a little home-loving roadside reunion, members of Al and Terry’s family arrived late in the day to inundate them with compassion, tenderness, and affection. This outpouring of support reminds us all once again, why Al Rides.

‘SpaghettiOs On The Fly.’

It’s damn the more-knee-whoas, full steam ahead, and SpaghettiOs on the fly. There’s no time for lunch when you’re climbing the hillsides, bluffs, ridges, and slopes of Pennsylvania! Pushing through the second day of The Keystone State really did a number on Al. And speaking of numbers, let’s take a look at the Sunday ride … by the numbers:

> 87-miles traveled.
> 83-degree average.
> 2 stretches of long rolling hills.
> 8 hours in the saddle.
> 2000+ calories burned.
> 437 SpaghettiOs consumed.
> 1 very tired Pink Pedals 4 A Cure cyclist.

Al will rest in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania tonight, hitting the hills of PA again tomorrow. The Garden State awaits.

‘Up The Mountainside And Over The Al He Gain Knee River.’

Simply put, today was tough. The Saturday routine was simple, up one mountainside and down the other. Al ascended, pushing his legs to the max, then coasted during the descent, giving his knees precious time to recuperate and gain strength. Simulating the erratic motion of a yo-yo on a very tight string, Al moved up and down the precipitous roads of The Keystone State. Nearly eight hours after his departure from Grove City, Al ended his Saturday rollercoaster ride in Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania. It’s been forty days since Al and Terry left their home in Minnesota. This afternoon, while crossing the coursing brown waters of the Allegheny River, Al and Terry felt the all too familiar longing for the embrace of family and a desire to return home to the land of sky blue waters.

‘Elevating His Game.’

Going up! That’s the battle cry as Al approaches the mountainous terrain of Pennsylvania. Al departed Grove City at 7:40 a.m. (ET) on a chilly, yes chilly, Saturday morning. Temps were in the 50s, cold enough for a light riding jacket. As Al approaches the ascending Pennsylvania countryside, there’s no doubt he will need to Elevate His Game. According to Merriam-Webster, a mountain is defined as; “a landmass that projects conspicuously above its surroundings and is higher than a hill.” It’s the word conspicuously that will define Al’s ride over the next few days.

‘Connecting The Dots.’

Today was all about connections and meeting new friends from familiar places. Al and Terry started the morning with an interview on Cleveland CBS 19. It turns out that the photographer/reporter sent to cover the story (Dan) was born and raised in of all places, Minnesota. Later in the day, Al encountered a young man from another geographic locale near and dear to our road-worthy couple, Chicago, Illinois. The young man wanted Al to visit a few local schools to help educate the students about the fun and great health benefits of biking. Perhaps another time as Al presses on to the east. Always wonderful to connect with members of the community and meet new friends along the ride route.

Strong winds and cool temperatures greeted Al at the start of day thirty-four but by mid-day, Al was enjoying the first great day of riding weather with mild temps, low humidity, and fairly favorable winds. It only took five weeks! ;-} Good weather and good roads helped Al push for a nine-hour day in the saddle and 94-miles, arriving in Grove City, Pennsylvania late this afternoon! That’s state number eleven with two states to go. First order of business tonight, sleep. There’s work to be done tomorrow as Al faces the peaks and valleys of Pennsylvania.

‘Friday Morning Fury Of Lake Erie.’

The full fury of Lake Erie greets Al as his pushes off Friday morning from Cleveland, Ohio.

‘The Heart Of Rock & ROLL Is In Cleveland.’

Rocking 90+ miles a day for over a week, Al ROLLED into Cleveland at the end of the thirty-third day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Al left Fremont, Ohio this morning at 7:15 a.m. (ET) ready to battle more intense heat and humidity. With storms nipping at his Pink Pedals most of the day, Al logged a total of 94-miles on Thursday, arriving in Cleveland just ahead of a nasty storm. Thankfully, Al was able to climb inside the chase car with Terry before the skies opened. Al is hoping to complete his trip across Ohio by the end of the week, crossing into Pennsylvania over the weekend. Banking LOTS-O-MILES over the past several days is all part of the plan as Al looks up to the mountains and mountainous terrain of The Keystone State.

He’s a firecracker alright! Like a bottle rocket on the 4th Of July, Al’s performance on the thirty-second day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride was nothing short of explosive. Launching from Paulding, Ohio this morning feeling great, Al arrived in Fremont, Ohio this afternoon banking a record-breaking one day ride of 108-miles! HUGE THANKS to the wonderful staff at the Quality Inn in Fremont, Ohio for the very warm welcome, treats, and complimentary room. On behalf of Al and Terry, Happy IndeSPINdence Day all!

DAY 32. QUICK RIDE STATUS > EVENING EDITION:

‘Happy IndeSPINdence Day Part 2.’

Al and Terry would like to wish everyone a Happy IndeSPINdence Day from Independence, Ohio. Al began his ride this morning in Paulding, Ohio at 7:20 a.m. (ET) but quickly found himself pedaling through Independence, Ohio. An appropriate place to be while spinning his wheels on this 4th of July in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). While Al is hoping for 90+ miles today, the overwhelming heat and a serious lack of wind will conspire to stifle our star-spangled cyclist as he propels himself along the thruways and thoroughfares of Ohio.

‘Oh … Hi, Ohio.’

Al seemingly sprinted through Indiana, allowing him to pedal into state number ten Tuesday afternoon. Arriving in Ohio one day early is an epic achievement but after thirty-one consecutive days in the saddle, you can bet that Al is dreaming of crossing into the ‘Knickerbocker State’ and catching forty winks in a certain city that never sleeps. More on Al’s projected arrival in New York very soon.

Pedaling into Paulding, Ohio Tuesday afternoon, dog-tired and drained as the dog days of summer begin to settle in, Al stopped at the Ohio state line to reflect on today’s extremely tough ride. As Al continues on his easterly track, so too does a dangerous heat wave. Temps were in the 90s most of Tuesday with heat indices at 101 and above. And if the heat wasn’t bad enough, Al was forced to deal with very strong headwinds for 70 of the 93-miles traveled today. All Al can do tonight is hope that Ohio, the birthplace of aviation pioneers, provides him with more favorable winds to fly through the Buckeye State.

Part of the daily routine … Al slathers up his lower lip with a little zinc and he’s ready to ride on day thirty-one of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018.

‘Who Sure Knows The Hoosier State?’

On the thirtieth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride, Al found himself in the Hoosier State, Pink Pedaling past familiar pastoral scenes of rural splendor. Rows of sprouting corn, waving wheat, and red-ripe tomatoes dotted the horizon as Al made quick work of the first Monday in July. Al knows this state like the back of his map, confident of his path over the hills and all too infrequent valleys of Indiana, The Crossroads Of America.

DAY 30. QUICK RIDE STATUS > EVENING EDITION:
> Start/Time Of Ride:
Foresman, Indiana 7:20 a.m. (CDT).

> End/Time Of Ride:
Al arrived in Lagro, Indiana at 2:30 p.m. having traveled 95-miles. Another banner day.

> Weather:
Low humidity and temps in the 70s greeted Al and Terry Monday morning. By the end of the day, temps soared into the 90s with zero wind making Al’s Monday ride all about the pedaling and no roll.

> MILEstone:
There was no official state line near Foresman, Indiana so Al and Terry made their own. See the photos that follow.

> Road Conditions:
A little hilly but overall, roads were good.

‘The Training Wheels Are Off!’

After three years of riding in support of Terry and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), Al has accomplished much. You could even say that the first two years of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride were a form of long-distance training, helping Al hone his Pink Pedal Prowess when it comes to rhythm, pace, and performance. Well, as of today, THOSE TRAINING WHEELS ARE OFF PEOPLE!

Al crushed his previous personal best for miles in one day riding an astounding 106.5-miles from Pontiac, Illinois to Foresman, Indiana and beyond. No doubt the strong winds at his back, flat pavement, less humidity and lots of clouds played a small part in this monumental achievement. At the end of the twenty-ninth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2108, Al has completed 66% of the ride.

Al’s strength and motivation can be found in many places. The love of his courageous wife Terry, the desire to create awareness for breast cancer research, and today, Al found inspiration from his granddaughter Addie who for the first time, rode ‘her’ bicycle, without training wheels. Addie’s inspiration? Her amazing MawMaw and PawPaw, their ride to New York City and a dream that one day, the BCRF will find a cure for breast cancer. Way to go Addie! Way to go Al! Together, breast cancer doesn’t stand a chance!

Like every day of their life, Al and Terry tackle each challenge together.

‘A Tale Of Two Photos.’

All you need do is look at the two photos below to fully understand Al’s twenty-eighth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. At 7:04 a.m. in Williamsville, Illinois, Al donned the zinc, pulled on the pink, and was ready to roll. By mid-afternoon, Al had blinked, was starting to sink, and ready to stroll … to the nearest ice bath. After 95 stifling miles on the road, Al called it a day in Pontiac, Illinois. The heat and exceedingly bumpy roads took a toll on Al’s mind, body, and soul. Not to worry! Al will recharge the battery tonight and be back in the sultry saddle on Sunday, pushing those Pink Pedals for Terry and breast cancer research.

BLOG ENTRY Day 27. | 06/29/18 | 6:30 p.m. (CDT)
‘When You’re Hot, You’re Hot.’

Heat indices soared from 101-to-111 degrees during the twenty-seventh day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Al took the heat in stride, matching the near record-breaking temps with a 101 of his own. As Al rolled into Williamsville, Illinois late today, he had amassed a mind-blowing 101-miles. No doubt the 6:30 a.m. departure and the flat plains of Illinois contributed to Al’s long-distance ride, an amazing accomplishment considering Al has been riding for twenty-seven consecutive days.

Al set such a blistering pace today that his speed caught the attention of local police who graciously gave Al and a pass. ;-} They also took a moment out of their hectic day to check-in on our number one chase car driver to ensure that Terry was handling the heat and Al’s accelerated pace without issue. The only bump in the road during today’s ride had to do with yet another flat tire. Thankfully, the top tech crew at Wheel Fast Bicycle Company in Chatham, Illinois fixed Al’s flat and got him back on the road in no time. HUGE THANKS to Jason and Jeremy.

Al got off his bike tonight feeling great! We’ll all have to wait until tomorrow to find out what this marathon man will do next. Until then, goodnight from Williamsville, just north of Springfield, Illinois.

‘A Spring In His Step As Al Heads Toward Springfield.’

Al set off from southern Illinois this morning at 6:50 a.m. heading due north to Springfield, Illinois. He’s Thinkin’ Lincoln as he pedals from one heat advisory to another. The humidity isn’t helping matters either. At least the rain and storms have abated for now. ‘Hello, Illinois! Who Says You Can’t Go Home?’

As Mr. Bon Jovi and Ms. Jennifer Nettles so brilliantly put it, “I hijacked a rainbow and crashed into a pot of gold. Been there, done that …” In other words, who says you can’t go home? On the twenty-sixth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, Al and Terry find themselves in the Prairie State, checking for rainbows after another round of severe storms. The pot of gold will need to wait as Al hunkers down to prep for a southern assault of Illinois over the next couple of days, looking for some Hoosiers by the end of the weekend. Welcome home you two!

DAY 26. QUICK RIDE STATUS > EVENING EDITION:
> Start/Time Of Ride:
St. Clair, Missouri 6:30 a.m. (CDT) with storms on the horizon, 77 degrees and heat advisories posted through Saturday.

> End/Time Of Ride:
Al arrived in Edwardsville, Illinois mid-afternoon Thursday with temps in the low 90s and heat indices hovering around 107 degrees. Like yesterday, Al clicked off another 85-miles. Amazing considering the heat and humidity.

> Road Conditions:
From St. Clair, Missouri, to St. Louis and up to the Illinois border, roads were in good condition but the hills persisted. As soon as Al crossed over the historic Chain Of Rocks Bridge, officially entering Illinois, the hills vanished! Thank you flatlanders!

‘So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen (or in this case) All Feet Are Strained, Goodbye.’

As the old saying goes, there is an end to everything, to good things as well. Such is the case on the twenty-fifth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Today Al and Terry Reszel said goodbye to Steve and Leanne Carmany. Thank you for your support, your strength, and your friendship. Sharing the ride with you has been nothing short of awesome.

‘Bridging The Gap.’

The twenty-fourth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 was just another rainy day on the road for our waterlogged team. Al is wondering when the Show Me State is going to SHOW him a little less humidity and a lot more sun.

Dodging the raindrops wasn’t the only thing Al had to evade today. At one point, a deer came out of nowhere, jumping in front of Al. The deer slipped on the wet pavement and nearly knocked Al off his bike.

Near Hazelgreen, Missouri, the boys ran into yet another roadside obstacle when a bridge they encountered was no longer in, but out. ;-} Did that stop Al and Steve? Heck no. Thankfully, the residents of this lovely rural hamlet provided a stylish parkway Thinking Chair for weary travelers contemplating the closed bridge conundrum. After a think and quick brainstorming session, Al and Steve decided that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line … right across the closed bridge. The bridge plan was brilliant for bikes but for not so much for cars. Once the boys safely made their way across the bridge, Terry and Leanne navigated around the closed roadway, meeting up with Al and Steve a few minutes down the road.

Today’s ride ended at 2:45 p.m. (CDT) in Devils Elbow, Missouri 75-miles from their Marshfield starting point. The Gateway City of St. Louis, Missouri looms large in the distance.

A brief morning update for the twenty-fourth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Al and Steve pushed off from Marshfield, Missouri at 7:10 a.m. (CDT). Another night of severe storms and heavy rain gave way to more rain this morning, not enough to delay the start of what will be Steve’s second to the last day on the road with Al. ‘Divine Intervention.’

Despite the threat of rain and storms forecast throughout the day, Al and Steve were blessed with an uneventful ride, a favorable tailwind and the gift of kindness on this twenty-third day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Thanks to the Big Guy up above and the Big Guy (Pastor Max) at the Marshfield Assembly Of God Church in Marshfield, Missouri. Pastor Max and Sandy were kind enough to invite Al and Steve into their church at the end of an 80-mile ride, offering fellowship, air-conditioning, and a cold drink. So thankful for people like Pastor Max and Sandy. Their warm hospitality, friendship and uplifting presence ‘lifted’ the spirits of Al and Steve, making ready for another day on the road. Tomorrow will be all about the hills as Al and Steve travel through Devils Elbow and Newburg, Missouri.

‘Rainy Days And Mondays …’

Rainy days and Mondays may get some people down, but not our intrepid Pink Pedals 4 A Cure team. After a delayed start due to heavy rain and terrible storms, the deluge relented long enough for Al and Steve to set off on day twenty-three at 8:00 a.m. (CDT). Rain is in the forecast again for much of the day. FYI. This is unprecedented territory for Al. In 2017, he rode a total of 1740-miles. Reaching the halfway point of the ride yesterday, each mile from this point on is a historic MILEstone for Al and Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride. Stay dry boys.

As Al and Steve officially said goodbye to the West and hello to the Midwest, we’d be remiss if we didn’t throw down some authentic cowboy vernacular to help rekindle some of the sights and sounds of the twenty-second day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Without further ado, please enjoy something we like to call … The Best Of The West, Sometimes They Were Stressed, But It’s All About The Quest, Raucous Reszel Roundup (The Sunday Evening Edition).

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 1. ‘According To Hoyle’

Al and Steve left Vinita, Oklahoma at 7:40 a.m. (CDT) with temps in the low 70s and a steady rain.

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 2. ‘All Beer And Skittles’
Cowboy translation … Unpleasant, not so happy.
Sunday was a LONG, HARD, WET day. Al and Steve covered 82-miles, 8-hours in the saddle with only one hour without rain. And to make matters worse, our boys had to deal with yet another flat, five in all between Al and Steve.

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 3. ‘Apple Pie Order’
Cowboy translation … In top shape, perfect order.
While the weather wasn’t on their side, road conditions continued to improve as Al and Steve finished today in Carthage, Missouri, wet to the bone but feeling great! Truth be told, due to the poor weather conditions, Al had planned on a 60-mile ride today but our boys in Pink pushed for an additional 22-miles.

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 4. ‘Bend An Elbow’
Cowboy translation … They’ve been known to have a drink with the folks.
Al, Terry, Steve and, Leanne have something to celebrate tonight. Al reached Afton, Oklahoma, the official halfway point of the Los Angeles to New York Ride.

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 5. ‘Cattle Kate’
Cowboy translation … A female cattle rustler.
After lunch today, a challenge was set before Al and Steve. Some local youngins with steel horses of their own thought they could outride our two-stepping tandem team. In the end, they were right, easily beating Al and Steve in a straight fair high stakes and low spokes dash.

SUNDAY ROUNDUP ITEM 6. ‘Moppin Their Plates At The Grub Pile’
Cowboy translation … Eating everything, licking their plates clean at the Chuckwagon.
After 7 hours in the rain, Al and Steve are looking forward to filling their bellies with some hot grub and grabbing a hot shower.

‘Fortune Favors The Bold.’

No doubt about it, the twenty-first day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 favored the bold, the determined, and the resolute or as we like to say, RESZELute. Al’s story of support and dedication at home and on the road is one for the record books. Terry’s story of breast cancer diagnosis and survival is nothing short of a miracle. Al and Terry know all too well that there are thousands of other breast cancer stories, each one unique to the individual and family dealing with this harrowing disease.

From time-to-time, Al and Terry will take in the occasional local roadside attraction. Today they happened upon the Blue Whale in Catoosa, Oklahoma. That’s where they met Linda, a volunteer at the Blue Whale, recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Al and Terry shared their story of love, commitment, and faith in the hope of helping Linda find comfort and strength as she begins her own courageous journey. Please join us in saying a prayer for Linda and all those fighting the good fight tonight. We pray that each and every individual and family facing diagnosis and treatment, find the fortitude to be bold and the power to win!

‘The Sunflower State Awaits.’

Thanks, Sapulpa! It’s been real … wet, humid, and downright sticky! After a stormy relationship with Oklahoma, Al and Steve headed out Saturday morning at 7:20 a.m. (CDT) courting a more northerly liaison with the Sunflower State. Whether flora, fauna or anything in-between, Al and Steve will take whatever SUN they can get, even if it’s only in a state nickname like that of Kansas. The Sunflower State will need to wait for another 24 to 36 hours as Al and Steve plow through the remainder of Oklahoma. Get along there cowboys, your carbon frame horses are ready to ride.

‘Pop Goes The Reszel.’

Before we get into the Friday ride details, let’s rewind for a moment and go back to Thursday night. Before retiring for the evening, Al, Terry, Steve and, Leanne made a quick stop at Pops 66 in Arcadia, Oklahoma, home to over 700 kinds of soda, sparkling water, and other ice-cold beverages. In short, Pops 66 is the place to stop. This ain’t no bookstore or place to eavesdrop. You can drink, you can eat, you can simply just flop but make no mistake this is one awesomely carbonated shop. Grab a seat if you can at the nearest tabletop while you guzzle that soda, it’s impossible to stop. Before you dash, grab your phone for a selfie image swap, you can’t leave beverage heaven without a quick photo op.

The twentieth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 began at 7:20 a.m. (CDT) in Wellston, Oklahoma. As in days past, morning temps were in the mid-60s, a comfortable place to begin the day. A serious lack of pavement shoulder along the roadway and hours of rolling hills made for an interesting 75-mile ride today. While the boys in Pink experienced zero bike breakdowns, Al’s tweaked muscle from yesterday means lots of ice, an early dinner, and bed rest for the night to nurse that temporarily troublesome appendage. Saturday will come soon enough and everyone is looking forward to the ride through Tulsa, Oklahoma.

‘The Fix Is In.’

The nineteenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 can be summed up with a twist on an old worn-out phrase that appropriately describes today’s ride … ‘if it IS broke, FIX it.’ Worn-out fills the bill for today as Al and Steve battled not the weather but their bikes.

Steve was feeling a bit deflated late in the day when his back tire got tired and decided to take a little spare time for a pancake. Translation: Steve got a flat. ;-} Al wasn’t immune to the technical difficulties experienced throughout the day, forced to make a pitstop at a local bike shop to get his derailleur debugged or in gear or both. Thankfully, Al found help at Al’s Bicycles of course. What are the odds right? HUGE thanks to Jeff for the quick fix and tune-up. Fun Fact: Al’s Bicycles can be found in Edmond, Oklahoma, the very town Al and Terry lived many years ago. It’s so wonderful to come home and experience the kindness of your former community. Like you never left.

Even with the bike breakdowns, Al and Steve rode 78-miles, ending their ride today in Wellston, Oklahoma. Tonight Al and Terry will no doubt reminisce about their time in Edmond, stop by the old neighborhood and grab a bite to eat at one of their former fav restaurants in town. So great to share these fond remembrances with good friends.

‘All Day Long.’

Like the name of the new Garth Brooks song, Al and Steve will be riding ‘All Day Long’ through the beautiful prairies and mesas of The Sooner State. Day nineteen of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride began with a beautiful sunrise which soon gave way to a few sprinkles. Al and Steve set off at 7:15 a.m. (CDT) with temps in the low 70s. Hoping for a much drier day as Al and Steve look ahead to Oklahoma City, Wellston and, Chandler, Oklahoma.

‘Flat Tire Lag, A Pink Do-Rag, And Plenty Of Ice Bags.’

An abbreviated blog entry tonight as our Biker Boyz need to purchase more gear in preparation for potential flat tire lags, launder their brand new do-rags, find a route with fewer zigzags and pamper their sore legs with lots and lots of ice bags.

DAY 18. QUICK RIDE STATUS > EVENING EDITION:
> Start Of Day Departure:
Al and Steve left Elk City, Oklahoma at 8:05 a.m. (CDT).

> End Of Day Arrival:
Arriving twelve-miles short of El Reno, Oklahoma, Al and Steve rode 73-miles total today. A HUGE win considering the nasty weather conditions.

> Weather:
Morning temps in the mid-60s with a steady light rain for the first two hours of the ride. The remainder of the day, Al and Steve fought a tough headwind and mid-day temps in the mid-90s.

> MILEstone:
Al fulfilled what is now an annual ride tradition, purchasing a very PINK do-rag somewhere along the ride route. The Route 66 themed do-rag obtained today will help keep Al’s brow dry and his head, less striped. ;-}

> Road Conditions:
Fair. Al experienced his second flat in the past eighteen days along the ride route today.

> Special Note:
The early storms, rain, and wind made Wednesday the most challenging day in the saddle so far. Al is looking forward to a cold bath and a hot pasta dinner.

Another flat! That’s two flats in eighteen days. Hope it’s not a trend.

Severe storms raged through the night and early morning hours, setting up for a very wet start to the eighteenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Al and Steve stepped off this morning at 8:05 a.m. (CDT) in Elk City, Oklahoma to a cold light rain with temps in the mid-60s. Terrible winds in every direction but at their back forecast today. By far this will be the most challenging weather day yet. At least their spirits are high and both Al and Steve are feeling good. Be careful out there boys it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Fact: As the seventeenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 comes to a close, Al will have pedaled nearly 4,000-miles in support of his wife Terry and breast cancer research. Tuesday morning started out with a moment of prayer and reflection at The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ Ministries rest area in Groom, Texas. Truly remarkable. From there, our fearless foursome traveled across town to view the Groom Leaning Water Tower, an ingenious marketing gimmick created by a local truck stop and restaurant owner.

Having filled their hearts with peace and their eyes with a dangling municipal utility tower, Al and Steve set off from Alanreed, Texas at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) for a planned 70-mile ride to Sayre, Oklahoma. By mid-day, Al and Steve crossed into the state of Oklahoma, pushing hard through unfavorable winds and intense heat. By late afternoon, Al and Steve raised the white flag allowing Mother Nature a rare win, ending their 80-mile ride for the day a full 10-miles past Sayre despite temps in the mid-90s, intense humidity and, the windy conditions.

‘All My TREKex’s Live In Texas.’

‘And Texas is the place I’d dearly love to be.’ At least for tonight and part of tomorrow. Thanks again to George Strait for helping us put Al’s Don’t Mess With Texas Tour into perspective. It’s obvious that the local constituency is all aflutter about Al’ s blistering pace through the Lone Star State. Many have said, ‘There’s a big difference between an ox and a whiffletree.’ Texas translation … Al’s got more guts than you could hang on a fence. We tend to agree, partner.

Today was all about turbines, slug bugs, and visiting with the local constabulary to check on road conditions and directions. When the Monday ride was all said and done, Al and Steve found themselves 81-miles down the road in Alanreed, Texas or Gouge Eye as the legend is told. Texas Fun Fact: According to the White Deer Land Museum … the two Gray County towns of McLean and Alanreed acquired the nicknames Rusty Shanks and Gouge Eye respectively. According to one legend, these two nicknames originated as a result of a fight between a boy from McLean and one from Alanreed. The McLean cowboy used a pair of rusty spurs on his opponent, and the boy from Alanreed gouged out an eye of his foe with his fingers. OK! While that wasn’t exactly fun, nor was it an actual fact, the SOONER you remove the visual of that authentic frontier folktale from your brain, the better. And speaking of SOONERS, Al will visit state number five tomorrow when he pedals into Oklahoma, hometown to country music superstar Garth Brooks, baseball great Johnny Bench, and legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey.

‘One Piece At A Time.’

Like the Johnny Cash song that popularized the famed GM Cadillac brand and iconic vehicle, Al has been putting together the last fifteen days of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, ‘One Piece At A Time’. This morning, soon after Al and Steve set off on the sixteenth day of the ride, our temporary Texas travelers came upon the acclaimed Cadillac Ranch roadside attraction on Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas. With the fins pointing skyward, the long row of graffiti clad Caddys stood erect in a somewhat ceremonious pose, presenting Al and Steve with a vehemently vertical two-wheel salute.

‘May You Ride Like A Locust!’

As many of you know, Steve and Leanne Carmany joined Al and Terry last night for their anniversary celebration. What some of you may not know is that Steve and Leanne will also be along for the ride, for the next ten days. As mentioned in the blog last night, Leanne will be Terry’s chase car co-pilot and Steve will be at Al’s side, riding and sharing every moment along the way. Since today was the very first tandem ride, we thought it appropriate for Steve’s words to Al and Terry the night before they began Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, to carry this very special blog post and message of friendship.

> Weather: Al and Steve dodged the rain again today but strong winds made riding difficult later in the day. Morning temps were in the 70s but by the end of the day, temps were back in the mid-80s.

> State MILEstone: Al and Steve crossed the Texas state line at 9:30 a.m. (CDT).

> Road Conditions: The Sunday route roads were in fair condition. Al and Steve would have made better time and logged more miles if the road were in better shape.

> Ride End: Al and Steve finished their first 84-mile tandem ride today, ending the ride in Bushland, Texas.

‘Under The Interstate And Through The Wood Holes To The Empire State We Go.’

Under the interstate? Over the wood holes? Yep, the fourteenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 included horrendous roadways at the start as Al dodged potholes filled with wood (see picture below) and route detours that took Al and Terry under the interstate. The frontage roads will become a way of life over the next few weeks as the upcoming ride route will occasionally migrate from the more heavily traveled highways. Thankfully road conditions improved later in the day, helping Al reach San Jon, New Mexico, 78-miles from his Saturday morning start.

Al flirted with severe weather, surrounding him most of the day but it never really materialized. A minor downpour and some brief blustery winds were all that Al encountered today, helping to help cool his body down after an accelerated anniversary advance ever eastward, toward the Big Apple.

Tonight, Al and Terry will relax and celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with good friends. Steve and Leanne Carmany will be joining Al and Terry tonight for a special evening of love, laughter, blessings, and stories from the road. On Sunday it’s back to work for everyone as Steve saddles up and joins Al on the ride while Leanne takes the co-pilot seat in the chase car with Terry. Happy Anniversary Al and Terry!

‘One For My Baby And One More For The Road.’

On this the fourteenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, Al and Terry celebrate 40 years of wedded bliss. A tremendous personal milestone with a story as long as the road they travel. Dedicated to the ride and those they support, our still love-struck pink pedaling power couple will need to save the celebrating for later as Al pushes today to close out the state of New Mexico. Rain is in the forecast and, Al will do his best to stay ahead of the storm front, nipping at his heels.

Al begins the day with 31% of the ride completed but rain threatens the fourteenth day of the ride.

‘100% Chance Of Man-Made Shade.’

Just a quick update tonight as Al and Terry prep for another weekend on the road. On this thirteenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, the routine of the daily ride has become all but, routine.

Al is in good spirits and good shape both mentally and physically. As in days past, Al spent the better part of Friday climbing and descending amassing 78-mile during his roadway reckoning. The weather forecast for today called for beautiful blue skies, the occasional billowy white cloud, and a 100% chance of man-made shade. Undeterred, Terry found shade under a very tall gas station roadside sign. Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, or in this case, a gift sign, Al and Terry hunkered down to enjoy a little lunch under the Phillips 66 sunspot.

While on the road today a very nice woman approached Al and Terry, generous with her time and donation to the ride. The kindness of strangers never ceases to amaze Al and Terry. Santa Rosa, New Mexico is now on the horizon. With the route terrain leveling off over the next few days, Al (former Illinois flatlander) excitedly looks forward to the less mountainous reprieve and to the looming state of Texas.

‘A Good Cup Of Joe And He’s Ready To Go.’

Settling into the daily grind on this twelfth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, Al departed Golden, New Mexico at 7:15 a.m. (MT) fueled with not breakfast, but a good cup of joe. Thanks to Java Junction in Madrid, New Mexico for the caffeine-infused breakfast buzz!

Blue skies and mild temps in the mid-80s ruled the day as Al set his sights on Ilfeld, New Mexico located in San Miguel County. Road conditions throughout the day were good except for the extremely small shoulders, crowding Al between the edge of the pavement, the brush, and the occasional ‘brush’ with traffic.

With the caffeine still pumping through his veins, Al bypassed his lunchtime fuel break, climbing 40-miles uphill during the morning hours, and 40-miles downhill during the afternoon. Just another uneventful day on the road for Al and Terry, edging ever closer to Texas, but that’s for another day. Goodnight all.

‘Worth His Weight In Gold … en.’

Al Reszel, the official ‘Golden Boy’ of the Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, has done it again. With threatening skies throughout the day, a sunburned lower lip, and nose, Al departed Budville, New Mexico this morning with gold fever, hoping to reach the town of Golden, New Mexico 84 miles down the road. Along the way, Al peddled through brilliant sunshine while black clouds raged. Thankfully, the rain held off and Al finished today’s ride on the dry-side of things, much like the desert-like plants and creatures that inhabit the New Mexico landscape.

While Al was putting the Pink Pedals to the metal, Terry was channeling the all-powerful deity of satellite radio, rekindling fond memories of a certain wedding day 40 years ago, and a coincidental moment from the road during the 2017 ride. Like last year, while following Al on a nondescript patch of pavement, Terry was blindsided when out of the blue, the song ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ begins to play on the radio. With the volume now jacked (to 11), tears in her eyes, singing every word of the song at the top of her lungs like an Ed McMahon Star Search finalist, Terry fully surrenders to the wedding anniversary memory of days gone by, of that first dance with Al, and the uncanny appropriateness of the lyrics as they pertain to the 2018 ride.

‘Divide And Conquer.’

Ever wonder why Al and Terry are so successful on the road and in life? It all comes down to three little words, divide and conquer. While Al is concentrating on the road, the route, and the routine, Terry is all about the chase, the support, and the organization. Together, they make an incredible team, a true force of nature, giving of themselves so that others have a chance to survive and succeed. ‘What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder’ (Mark 10:9). An appropriate passage considering Al and Terry are fast approaching their 40th wedding anniversary (June 16th). With all of their shared singularity, it was kind of ironic that Al and Terry found themselves crossing the Continental DIVIDE of all things today.

With his Tuesday goal achieved, Al rode into Budville, New Mexico, wrapping up another 80-mile day on the road. Traffic was a bit heavier, road conditions slightly improved, and temps, well, they hovered again in the mid-90s. The higher temperatures are now a way of life. After all, June heralds the summer season and the western part of the United States this time of year can be on the warm side (understatement of the year). ;-}

Well, that’s all from Budville, New Mexico tonight, named for N.H. ‘Bud’ Rice, founder of the Budville Trading Company, original town tour guide, and the very first Budville Justice Of The Peace. Let’s end on the word peace, with a little hope thrown in for good measure.

‘Cold Enough For You?’

Pescado, New Mexico on day ten of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 was downright frosty with temps in the mid-40s. Donning his trusty jacket, Al commenced with the usual pre-ride morning prep, visualizing the route and preparing for another ride through the beautiful western countryside, growing ever-greener as Al closes in on Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Al ready to begin the tenth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. A cool start to the morning is a blessing to be sure.

‘Hello, New Mexico!’

Arizona is officially in the rearview mirror! As the 88-mile Monday ride came to a close, Al crossed into New Mexico, ending his multi-day journey through the state of Arizona, where God Enriches. The ninth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride was full of difficult road conditions, a lot of bull (see photos that follow), and something near and dear to Al’s heart, wild mustangs. While the New Mexico mustangs encountered on the road today did not have the Ford badge emblazoned on the carriage of their chassis, much like a certain mustang currently housed in a far-off Minnesota garage, their beauty, and horsepower was a sight to behold.

All in all, it was a good day on the road. Temperatures fluctuated 30 degrees from the middle 50s in the early morning to the middle 80s in the afternoon. Winds were light during Al’s 7.5 hours in the saddle as poor road conditions and long vertical pavement grates, ‘great’ for bike tire insertion, continued to plague Al on his way to Pescado, New Mexico. That’s where today’s ride ended, elevation 6,775, home to the Greater Roadrunner and Yucca flower.

‘Leaving Chambers, Arizona With 2,825-Miles To Go.’

An abbreviated update for the ninth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Al left Chambers, Arizona this morning at 7:00 a.m. (MT). Weather conditions at the time of departure were ideal with temps in the high 50s and light winds. Nine days in and Al has already traveled 675-miles with 2,825-miles to go to reach his goal. More to come. Stay tuned.

‘Forest Stump.’

“Mama say they was magic pink pedal shoes. They could take me anywhere.” A phrase that echoed throughout the Petrified Forest National Park this afternoon. By the end of the eighth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018, all Al could say was … “Done Forest Done.” Excellent winds and sheer determination helped propel our bionic bicyclist to a record-breaking 95-miles in the 99-degree heat. The 7.5-hour ride today took Al and Terry through the Petrified Forest National Park. Beautiful but hilly, a once in a lifetime experience captured in the photos that follow.

‘Can’t See The Petrified Forest For The Trees.’

As the revolutions of the crankarm and chainring turn, these are the days of our lives. On this eighth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’ Ride 2018, the main characters of this cross-country soap opera and gripping saga find themselves near the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, as week two descends upon them, and the plot thickens. Leaving Winslow, Arizona this morning at 7:00 a.m. (MT) at a balmy 79 degrees, Al snapped in and rode off with new vigor and determination. But questions remain. Will Mother Nature rear her ugly head, forcing Al to toil further in extreme desert heat and humidity? Will Terry find shade for their daily lunch break? And what about the deteriorating road conditions? Will Al need to consider another detour? These answers and more will be revealed this evening, as the Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride … world turns.

‘An Elk Whacking, Car Snacking, Amtraking, Eagles Yakking.’

Based on that headline, you’re pretty much caught up for the day. Details? Okay. The thermostat was fickle today, teasing Al and Terry with 50s in the morning only to deliver heat worthy of the desert by day’s end. Topping out at 97 degrees, Al did his best with the fluctuating temps and a strong wind at his back, amassing a respectable 85-miles.

The seventh day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride ended in Winslow, Arizona. The moment Al rode into town, he ended the ride, jumped off his bike, found a cozy corner, and broke into song.

Al: ‘Well, I’m standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona, and such a fine sight to see, it’s a girl (Terry) my Lord in a Crimson Ford slowin’ down to take a look at me. Come on, baby, don’t say maybe. I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me.’

Yes. Al sings! He loves to sing, ;-} especially songs made famous by ’70s supergroup Abba, and the Eagles. Kidding, of course … Al hates Abba. It’s tough to go on after that kind of performance, but here goes. The rest of the day was filled with an Elk that met with an unfortunate accident, lunch in the car due to sparse surroundings, Terry contemplating a one-way Amtrak ticket, and a decision to take a more direct route (I-40) which in hindsight, will NEVER happen again. No rest for the weary, even at lunch. Al forced to eat in the car today as the sparse surroundings offered no suitable place to stop and refuel .

Al came across this unfortunate scene on the ride to Flagstaff today. He stopped to call Terry so she could catch up, dial 911, and report the loss to the local police. Really sad to see.

‘Baby It’s Cold Outside.’

Al and Terry awoke this morning to a pleasant surprise, temps in the mid-50s and diminished winds. After breakfast, Al departed Williams, Arizona at 7:00 a.m. (MT), ready to tackle the seventh day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Since June 3rd, Al has traveled a total of 495-miles averaging 82.5-miles a day. The 500-mile mark is within his grasp as Al pushes ever-closer to his next milestone, state number three, New Mexico. That’s for the tenth day of the ride, weather permitting. For now, Al continues to spin his way through the upper-middle portion of The Grand Canyon state.

A day of true extremes. Even though Saturday began with temps in the 50s, a real danger to life and property exists. God bless all those that put their lives on the line, fighting wildfires throughout Arizona and the United States.

‘It’s An Ill Wind That Bloweth No Man To Good.’

Several hundred years ago, either John Heywood or William Shakespeare popularized the phrase, It’s an ill wind that bloweth no man to good, or something to that effect. As you can probably imagine, over the years, much of that actual quote has been lost in translation, but you get the gist. It means a wind can blow either good or bad for any man. It all depends on the situation. For Al, it makes no difference who gets credit for coining the phrase. All he cares about is:

a. Why is the ill wind blowing?

and …

b. When the heck is it going to stop? ;-}

Those unfavorable winds that delayed things this morning returned the favor throughout most of the day, forcing Al to grind out all 81-miles between Peach Springs, Arizona, and Williams, Arizona. No ifs, ands, or Route 66 ruts, the ride today was grueling. It was slow going as the wind challenged Al to a good old-fashioned game of chicken, and the wind won most of the time. Thankfully, Al gets to ride into the waiting arms of his wife Terry each and every night, a constant source of energy, love and, support that recharges Al’s battery in time for the next asphalt assault.

‘Life is too short, have dessert first.’ A credo that many people embrace each and every day. After riding 81-miles against the wind, that’s a credo Al can support.

‘Unfavorable Winds Lead To An International Roadside Connection.’

The sixth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 was a bit delayed due to unfavorable winds in the region during the early morning hours. At 8:25 a.m. (MT), two hours after the original start time, Al mounted up to continue his Route 66 Arizona cycling adventure.

Two-hours down the road, Al and Terry came upon an international group of cyclists traveling in the opposite direction on a 51-day journey from Chicago, Illinois to the Santa Monica Pier. It’s so wonderful to see the smiles and enthusiasm from the many people already encountered along this well-traveled and celebrated road. Not revealing any secrets, this large group of cyclists remained strangely silent about Al’s upcoming New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma route. Al will find out soon enough as he pushes those pink pedals ever harder, crossing the great western frontier.

‘King Of The Mountain.’

Whether ascending or descending, Al proved today that he truly is King Of The Mountain, Oatman Mountain that is. Standing 1,741 feet at its apex, Oatman Mountain is a formidable force to be reckoned with. However, I reckon tonight, Al and Terry are just glad to be done with the fifth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride.

Mother Nature was kind Thursday, offering a slight break from the crazy hot temps experienced earlier in the week, blessing Al with blue skies, favorable winds and a refreshing temp of 92-degrees. ;-} He’ll take it. In fact, anything under 100 is a gift.

As the day progressed, sporadic signs of civilization occurred in the form of folk art, folk artists, and a renowned Route 66 storefront. That’s where Al and Terry enjoyed their first picnic lunch. Still in operation today, the staff at the Hackberry General Store welcomed our beloved western ramblers with open arms. As locals and Route 66 bloggers will tell you, the previous owner of the Hackberry General Store was none other than famed folk artist Bob Waldmire. Bob traveled and painted along Route 66 until he purchased and became the owner of the Hackberry General Store and sole resident of the town of Hackberry between 1992 and 1997.

After a hearty lunch and some pleasant conversation with Aunt Bee, Floyd The Barber and of course Goober, Al pressed on, eventually ending his day in Peach Springs, Arizona after riding 84-miles and spending 8+ hours in the saddle, all the while continuing to contend with the difficult Route 66 road conditions. Carb-loading and ice baths are on the agenda this evening as Al and Terry turn their attention to reviewing the week ending Friday route and ride.

‘An Uphill Battle Right From The Start.’

Just a quick update on Al’s Thursday morning progress. Instead of leaving at dawn as in days past, Al and Terry opted for a daylight start on this fifth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Saddling-up at 6:50 a.m. (MT) near the town of Oatman, Arizona, Al picks up where he left off on Wednesday evening, tackling a daunting uphill climb to start the day. Stay tuned. ‘Nowhere To Hide.’

For those of you following Al’s trials and tribulations, take a moment to look around. Take a snapshot of your surroundings and be mindful of the creature comforts that you find in your everyday life. As you dial down the thermostat a few degrees and bask in the miracle of 24/7 air-conditioning, be thankful that you’re NOT on a bike in the desert, in June!

The fourth day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 began again at dawn, 5:00 a.m. to be exact, to once again beat the heat. We know, sounds like a broken record. A record that is slowly melting before our very eyes. And speaking of records, while perusing USA Today, Al and Terry discovered that their Wednesday evening location, Needles, California, was yesterday’s National Extreme Hot Spot (see the photo below). As you can imagine, this wasn’t news to Al and Terry.

As Al pushed off this morning, the temperature was a frosty 66 degrees. Sensing the early morning desert chill, Al reached for an article of clothing as yet unseen low these past four days, a jacket. Unfortunately, the brisk morning air was only a temporary respite from the excessive desert heatwave.

The remainder of Al’s day included an arduous ten-mile climb, dodging rough terrain on Route 66, zero shade, the return of dizzying heat indices, and a chance encounter with fellow biking enthusiasts Christine and Ivan. Traveling in the opposite direction, Christine, and Ivan were days away from ending their own Route 66 Chicago to Santa Monica odyssey (by way of Italy). For just a few moments, the three cyclists stopped to share their road-worthy experiences. While a portion of their conversation was lost in translation, the three stedfast marathon cyclists shared a bond of grit and determination. Seven hours and 80-miles later, Al came to rest just beyond the town of Golden Shores, Arizona. Tomorrow, with California in the rearview mirror, Al continues his passage east, taking a northerly route across the western half of Arizona.

‘Blazing A Trail On Route 66.’

Al continues his blistering pace across the west, completing 80-miles in 8 hours on the third day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. That’s pretty amazing considering the sweltering conditions for much of the afternoon. Leaving in the wee-hours of the morning was nothing short of a Thunderstroke, allowing Al to start his day with calm, cool conditions. Unfortunately, as mid-day approached, the overwhelming heat and gusty conditions returned. Take it from Al, ‘when it’s 107 degrees, everything is HOT’ … what you eat, what you drink, etc. Cold water and shade are in short supply along this particular stretch of Route 66. The sun never relents and the wind has no equal. Misery loves company as the old saying goes and Al had plenty of that today. The misery and the company. The scorching heat provided the misery and the company, desert roadrunners and jackrabbits coming and going throughout the day. FYI for those geography lovers and map enthusiasts, (that’s right, we’re talking to you Al Vogler) tomorrow Al and Terry will make the transition from California, The Golden State, to Arizona, The Grand Canyon State. Based on the heat Al’s been forced to endure of late, it’s kind of like going from the frying pan, into the fire. Oh well. Onward we go! Tomorrow will be here before we know it.

‘Pre-Dawn Departure To Beat The Heat.’

Last night at the hotel, before retiring for the evening, Al and Terry grabbed a little jaw-time with a few local residents, inquiring about the route for the third day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018. Here’s what the townies had to say …

“One hotel, one cafe, one gas station, that’s about it.”

“Amboy is a dusty, deserted town.”

“Fenner and Essex? They’re practically non-existent.”

“Chambless is a ghost town.”

Quite the loquacious group wouldn’t you say? It’s pretty obvious from these uplifting and cheery comments that Al and Terry are in for quite the awe-inspiring ride today. And please don’t forget about the oppressive heat and unfavorable winds predicted, all of which make for another awesome day on the super-heated desert pavement.

‘If You Can’t Stand The Heat … Get Out Of The Mojave Desert.’

And that’s just what Al is trying to do! The second day of the 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride heated up as Al prodded and pushed his Pink Pedals down Route 66, entering the barren and desolate Mojave Desert. Temps on the black asphalt reached a scorching 107 degrees with high humidity and blistering skies. Not one hour into the ride, Al found himself nursing a flat tire caused by poor road conditions and sizeable potholes along historic Route 66. At times the winds were intense, kicking up dust devils and hurling blinding biker debris. All Terry could do was stay close, watch her man, and turn up the AC (Al Conditioning). ;-} While the temps in the chase car were comfortable, the conditions throughout the day continued to deteriorate. The ongoing bleak monotony of uninhabited landscapes occasionally gave way to small towns, appearing in the distance like a desert mirage. Thank goodness for hearty western businesses like the Desert Market, a welcome oasis of cold drinks, ice, and POWERBALL tickets. With all of the obstacles thrown at him on this manic Monday, Ironman Al was still able to knock off 90-miles, ending his ride in Newberry Springs, California.

‘You Can Lead A Biker To Water, But Can You Make Him … Pink?’

Al and Terry left the ‘comfort’ of their Choice Hotels Comfort Suites hotel this morning, heading for their Devore, California Monday morning starting point. The prior evening, Al and Terry hunkered down for a route strategy session, a ritual that has become part of the day-to-day Pink Pedals 4 A Cure ride prep and process. With the all-important morning carb load out of the way, Al and Terry bid farewell to civilization, looking ahead to more desert-like conditions. Promptly at 7:19 a.m. (PT), Al jumped aboard his trusty two-wheel steed, gave Terry a quick kiss and away he went. Today’s ride will take Al and Terry through the following California towns; Cajon Junction, Victorville, Oro Grande, Helendale, Hodge, Lenwood, Barstow, ending in Daggett.

‘Starts, Stops, And Snakes.’

The first day of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 can be summed up in one word … unyielding. When Al left the Santa Monica Pier this morning, the temps were a comfortable 60 degrees. As the day progressed, temps began to rise at a meteoric rate. By day’s end, the air temperature hovered near 97 degrees with heat indexes approaching 100+, taking a toll on Al during his inaugural 2018 ride. And if the heat wasn’t bad enough, the miles and miles of demanding stop and go traffic patterns and congested intersections only exacerbated the situation. Can’t imagine what the first day would have been like if Al had left on a weekday, with commuter and rush hour traffic flowing in and out of Los Angeles on the multitude of concrete highways in The Golden State. The best part of today’s route was the ride through Beverly Hills. As far as the eye could see, manicured lawns, posh homes, and unobstructed streets. Finally, after nearly 65-miles of formidable riding, Al found the open road and a more majestic horizon. Once acclimated to the western route and after a few unanticipated navigational and wildlife (rattlesnake) hurdles, Al and Terry settled in, making the best of a difficult first day on the road.

‘The Journey Begins!’

It’s official. The 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride is underway! Al departed from the Santa Monica Pier at 8:00 a.m. (PT) with Terry cheering him on while documenting the start of day one with photos and video. Today Al will be riding through West Hollywood, Los Angeles, South Pasadena, Pasadena, Rancho Cucamonga and all points east, ending his ride today near Devore, California. Lots more to come. ‘Al’s Departure From The Santa Monica Pier.’

‘California Dreamin Gives Way To PIER Pressure.’

At 12:30 p.m. (PT) Al and Terry arrived at the famed Santa Monica Pier. In less than 24-hours Al will saddle up and begin the ride of a lifetime. An epic journey of courage, stamina, and dedication begins tomorrow, an odyssey that celebrates the unceasing love of a husband for a wife. The 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride will be one for the record books, a cross-country expedition to raise our country’s consciousness regarding the value and critical need for breast cancer research. Al rides for all breast cancer survivors. Al rides for all those currently battling breast cancer. Al rides for the families supporting all those diagnosed with breast cancer. Each mile east will bring Al and Terry closer to their goal, to raise awareness and donations to help find a cure. No doubt a few nerves will give way to a little fear and tears tonight as Al and Terry contemplate the start of this considerable undertaking. But make no mistake, at 8:00 a.m. (PT) tomorrow morning, on Sunday, June 3rd, Al and Terry will be ready. It’s time to wish them well, extend our blessings and prayers as they embark on a mission for us all.

As has been the case for the past three days, Al and Terry continue to document their trip with photos that bring all of us a little closer to the true Pink Pedals 4 A Cure experience.

‘Viva Las THEYGUESS.’

Up at dawn, Al and Terry set out to cover the rest of Utah, a portion of Arizona, crossing into Nevada by mid-day. That’s where they’ll stay tonight, on the fringe of Sin City. And what pray tell is the Friday evening agenda for our stalwart nomads? It’s anyone’s GUESS really, except Al and Terry. Instead of taking in a show on the strip, dining at one of the many all-night buffets or playing slots until the wee-hours, Al and Terry will settle in for the night, enjoy a high carb pasta dinner, followed by lots and lots of sleep. In fact, I have it on good authority that Al and Terry are going to … ‘ZZZZZZZZZs’ the day … or the night in this case. With only two days to go, rest is key.

The trip west has been full of friendly faces and wide open spaces. One awesome encounter occurred in Utah during a quick convenience stop. While grabbing a few snacks for the road and getting a little gas for the Crimson Cruise Support Vehicle or CCSV for short, Al and Terry happened upon a couple of brothers, Scott and Steve, heading home on their own two-wheel cross-country odyssey. High winds, collegiate rivalry (Bama vs. USC) and a desire to help others brought them together. Their time that blustery day was brief but their shared experience will last a lifetime.

‘The Current STATE Of Affairs … It’s A Numbers Game Really.’

Two days on the road, six states by car with fifteen states to go. Over the course of the next several weeks, Al and Terry will move through twenty-one states in all. No biggie for Terry. She’s a seasoned road pro now, a four-wheeling gal with the Pink Gas Pedal To The Metal, prepping to follow Al as he makes his way up and down the highways and byways of every town USA. As for Al, the preferred mode of transportation comes with just two-wheels thank you very much. For now, Al and Terry are just happy to enjoy the ride, the calm before the ‘hectic norm’, taking in all of the beauty and splendor that God provides. That’s how Al and Terry roll … ROLL TIDE that is. For your viewing pleasure, cast your peepers upon the many sights of the western drive, day two.

‘The Quest To Tame The West, And The Rest … Begins Today.’

At 5:30 a.m. this morning, Al and Terry exited the threshold of their front door, something they won’t do again for another 40-to-50 days. As they made their way down the dimly lit path that leads to their gravel driveway and awaiting Crimson SUV, thoughts of sunny California and the start of Pink Pedals 4 A Cure 2018 raced through their heads. For the next few days, Al and Terry ride together, allowing their four-wheel vehicle to do the work. It will soon be a different story. On Sunday, Al with push off from the Santa Monica Pier on an all too familiar two-wheel vehicle on his quest to tame the west. By mid-day, Al and Terry were seeing ‘Great Faces & Great Places’ as they entered the state of South Dakota. Godspeed Al and Terry.

BLOG ENTRY … Keep On Trekking: 03/30/18 | 4:00 P.M. (CDT) — A ‘TOUR’ DE FORCE IN WATERLOO, WI. Al and Terry spent the morning touring the amazing Trek Bicycle factory in Waterloo WI. Trek is the brand of bike that carried Al through the 2016 and 2017 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride. Al will be back in the saddle of his Trek bike IN JUST 65 DAYS! That’s right! Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride 2018 kicks off on June 3rd from the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California. #KeepOnTrekingAlandTerry

BLOG ENTRY … 100 Days And Counting: 02/23/18 | 1:30 P.M. (CDT) — WE’RE STOKED! LOOKING FORWARD TO SOME GNARLY MILES. HELLA READY TO GET THIS UNDERWAY. In 100 days, the 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride will kickoff. An epic CROSS-COUNTRY 3,500-mile solo bicycle ride in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Al and Terry can’t wait to say … ‘Greetings From Santa Monica, California!’

BLOG ENTRY … Fall Fundraising, A Shared Experience: 10/17/2017 | 1:30 P.M. (CDT) — A LITTLE TRAINING, A LITTLE TALKING AND A WHOLE LOT OF SHARING. Over the past several weeks, Al and Terry have been out and about in the Richmond/St. Cloud region visiting local businesses, talking up the value of Breast Cancer Research, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) and asking for support to help fund the upcoming 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride. Last weekend was no exception as Al and Terry visited the Crafts Direct retail outlet in Waite Park, meeting and greeting residents and sharing their personal breast cancer experience. Without fail, at every location frequented, the courageous stories of breast cancer survival and loss humble Al and Terry as they celebrate the survivors and hold dear those lost to breast cancer. Thank you to all the residents that came out, for your kind words of encouragement and support. HUGE THANK YOU to Crafts Direct for the opportunity to tell our story.

BLOG ENTRY … A Little Fun And A Little Fundraising: 09/08/2017 | 5:30 P.M. (CDT) — A LABOR OF LOVE DURING THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND. While many took the Labor Day weekend to relax and enjoy the last ‘official’ weekend of summer, Al and Terry were out and about in their hometown, meeting and greeting the wonderful people of Richmond, MN, raising awareness for breast cancer and funds for the upcoming 2018 CROSS-COUNTRY 3,500-mile ride from Los Angeles, CA to New York City. As in years past, the 2018 Pink Pedals 4 A Cure | Terry’s Ride is in support of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

The good people at Plantenbergs – Food Pride in Richmond, MN hosted Al and Terry over the Labor Day weekend, allowing them to set up a small fundraising/training station near the front doors of this popular grocer. That’s right! I said fundraising and training. While Al and Terry shared their story with patrons of Plantenbergs, Al continued to train-in-place on his stationary bike.

During the two-day fundraising event over the Labor Day weekend, Al and Terry had an opportunity speak with many residents who took the time to share their own courageous stories of breast cancer survival and sacrifice. Needless to say, the many stories shared over the weekend further strengthened Al and Terry’s resolve to find a cure.
